Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is a large hybrid Alocasia with dark green shield-shaped leaves, pale green veins and deep purple undersides. The sturdy petioles lift the leaves above the pot as the plant matures.
The hybrid comes from Alocasia odora × Alocasia reginula and was bred by LariAnn Garner. Indoors it can become a striking floor plant with broad, thick leaves and a strong upright shape.
Alocasia 'Regal Shields' becomes top-heavy as the petioles lengthen, so a stable pot matters. The large leaves use more water during active growth, while the lower roots still need air after watering.
The leaves and stems can irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested, and sap may irritate sensitive skin. Keep the plant where pets and children cannot reach it.
The broad shield-shaped leaves and upright petioles give this cultivar its name.
