Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata' combines the large, upright growth of Alocasia macrorrhizos with irregular pale variegation across broad green leaves. It develops thick petioles, oversized blades and a substantial base as it matures.
The variegation can appear as cream, white or pale green sections depending on the individual leaf. New leaves may differ from older ones, so the plant builds a shifting pattern while keeping the heavy macrorrhizos growth beneath the colour.
Alocasia macrorrhizos is a large aroid species with thick stems, long petioles and broad leaves held near the stem tip. In the variegated plant, pale areas make the leaves more sensitive to harsh sun and dry edges, while the thick roots need warmth, moisture and air around the potting mix.
Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata' is an aroid with irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and avoid contact with sap around cut stems or damaged leaves.
The genus name Alocasia refers to its separation from Colocasia, with the Greek prefix a- meaning not or without. The epithet macrorrhizos combines Greek roots for large and root. In Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Variegata', that large-rooted species structure sits beneath irregular cream, white or pale green leaf patterning.
