Terrarium Base Substrate Set brings together the base components used in many humid planted-glass builds: a mineral base, moisture-buffer layer and a clean planting zone.

It is aimed at small tropical plants and moss setups where you want a predictable layer stack rather than improvising with random materials.

Lava rock forms a stable base layer, sphagnum can buffer moisture between layers, and the fine planting soil gives roots close contact in tight containers. Activated carbon is used in thin, measured amounts within the stack.

How to get started

Build a drainage base first, then add only a thin carbon layer before the barrier and planting zone.
Use sphagnum as a moisture buffer where the build benefits from it, not as a substitute for drainage.
Water after planting to settle the layers, then adjust only after you see how quickly moisture cycles in your container.

Most terrarium failures come from too much water and too little drainage height. Keep the base generous and the planting zone compact.

Drainage base: Use 1–2 cm Lava Rock Granules in small jars or 2–4 cm in medium jars.
Carbon layer: Add only a thin activated carbon layer, around 0.5–1 cm where space allows.
Separator: Use a light sphagnum layer between mineral base and planting substrate.
Rooting layer: Add around 5–8 cm fine planting substrate for compact tropical terrarium plants and mosses.
Optional texture: For a slightly more open rooting layer, mix 4 parts fine planting substrate with 1 part fine Lava Rock Granules.

Keep layers thinner in shallow jars so roots still have enough growing space. Lava rock and activated carbon add buffering, but they do not make overwatering safe. If water rises into the soil layer, the terrarium is too wet.
