Everyday Potting Soil Mix

• NPK nutrients: added nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium support foliage, root development and flowering.
• Lime: helps balance pH so roots can access nutrients efficiently and soil does not become too acidic.
• Peat fibre: improves aeration and water retention, keeping the mix springy rather than compact.
• Peat moss: enhances moisture management by absorbing and slowly releasing water.
• Peat chunks (Irish fraction): add structure and prevent the substrate from collapsing around roots.
• Trace elements: provides essential micronutrients such as zinc, iron and copper for complete plant nutrition.

Together, these ingredients create a soft, crumbly texture that stays workable, wets evenly and supports normal container growth.

• Prepare the plant: gently loosen the plant from its old pot and remove as much tired soil from the root ball as you can.
• Check the roots: remove loose old soil by hand and trim dead or rotten roots with clean scissors. Rinse only if the old mix is compacted, contaminated or difficult to remove safely.
• Trim dead leaves: cut off dead or damaged foliage with clean scissors so the plant can focus on fresh growth.
• Set up the new pot: choose a container with drainage holes and add enough Potting Soil Mix so the root ball sits at the right height.
• Position the plant: place the plant in the centre, spreading roots out gently; the point where roots meet the stem should sit slightly below the rim.
• Backfill with soil: fill around the root ball with fresh Potting Soil Mix, covering roots completely and leaving a watering rim of about 2 cm at the top.
• Settle the substrate: lightly press the mix to remove major air pockets without compacting it too much.
• Water thoroughly: water until excess runs from the drainage holes so soil can settle around the roots and make close contact.

• For thirsty plants: keep Potting Soil Mix as the main component; you can add a small amount of vermiculite or extra coco-based substrate to increase moisture retention.
• For aroids and epiphytes: blend the mix with pine bark, coconut husk chips and perlite for a chunkier, more aerated structure.
• For cacti and succulents: combine Potting Soil Mix with pumice and horticultural sand to create a much more free-draining substrate.
• For balcony boxes: use this mix as the base and add slow-release fertiliser later in the season when the initial nutrient charge is used up.
• Watering approach: allow the top layer to dry slightly before watering again, adjusting frequency for pot size, light and plant type.
• Monitoring plant response: if growth slows or leaves pale after some weeks, begin a light fertiliser routine to supplement the nutrients originally included in the mix.
