Phlox paniculata 'David' is a classic garden phlox in crisp white, selected for strong performance and notably good resistance to powdery mildew. The flowerheads are fragrant, sit on upright stems, and light up mixed borders in high summer without needing a complicated setup.
This is a set of three plants, ideal for planting as a small drift for impact. Mature clumps usually reach around 80 to 100 cm tall and 45 to 60 cm wide, with the main flowering window from July into September.
Best conditions for Phlox paniculata 'David'
- Light: full sun gives the strongest flowering; light shade is fine where summers run hot.
- Soil: fertile, humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains well.
- Air: good airflow keeps foliage cleaner and helps prevent mildew pressure.
- Watering: water the root zone, not the leaves - dry stress is what makes phlox struggle.
Keeping it flowering and tidy
- Deadhead: remove spent flowerheads to extend the display and keep plants looking fresh.
- Support: in rich soil, a discreet ring support keeps clumps upright after summer rain.
- Division: split clumps every few years in spring to keep flowering strong and to control spread.
Problems to watch for
- Powdery mildew: 'David' is resistant, but drought stress and still air can still trigger it.
- Leaf scorch: often a sign of drying out in heat or wind - mulch and deep watering help.
- Stems leaning: usually very rich soil or shade; reduce feeding and give more light.
