Gymnocalycium mihanovichii f. variegata is the colorful moon cactus form prized for compact size and bright red, orange, yellow, or pink tissue that contrasts strongly with its green rootstock. Because the variegated top lacks enough chlorophyll to support itself well, plants are commonly grown grafted onto a compatible green cactus base. This keeps the overall plant small and easy to place while highlighting the unusual color.
Give it bright, indirect light rather than harsh sun, use a fast-draining cactus mix, and water sparingly only after the substrate has dried fully. Average indoor humidity is fine, warm room temperatures suit it best, and overwatering remains the main cause of decline, especially in cool conditions or dense, moisture-retentive soil.
