Adenium obesum is grown for structure as much as bloom, forming a swollen caudex and thick branching stems that can look almost bonsai-like even before flowers appear. In strong sun and warmth it produces funnel-shaped blooms in shades ranging from pink to red, white, or bicolour, but low light quickly turns it into a weak, leafy shrub with little character. Use a very free-draining mineral-heavy mix, give several hours of direct sun, and water thoroughly only when the substrate has dried well.
Growth slows or pauses in cooler, darker periods, when the plant may drop leaves and needs far less moisture. All parts are poisonous if ingested, and the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Grown warm and slightly pot-tight, it becomes much more characterful with age.
