How to choose the right houseplant fertilizer

Indoor plants grow in a limited amount of substrate, so nutrients gradually get used by roots, washed out during watering or become less available as the mix ages. Houseplant fertilizers, plant food and additives help top up that nutrition when light, watering and root health are already in a good range.

Start with the growing method

Soil, coco and semi-hydro do not hold nutrients in the same way. Soil-grown plants can often use a regular liquid plant food or organic feed, while coco and inert semi-hydro setups need a more controlled nutrient routine. pH and CalMag products are support tools for specific water or substrate needs, not everyday plant food for every pot.

Choose the right product type

Complete feeds are used as the main source of nutrition. Root stimulators, enzymes, silicon, CalMag and pH adjusters have narrower jobs and usually work alongside a suitable base feed. For cuttings, orchids, palms, coco-grown plants or semi-hydro setups, choose a product that matches the plant type or growing method rather than using a random all-purpose bottle.

Dose for indoor conditions

Houseplants usually grow under lower light than greenhouse crops, so gentle feeding is often the better baseline. Start low, watch new growth and increase only when the plant is actively growing, the substrate drains properly and the roots are healthy. Freshly repotted plants may already have nutrients available from the new mix, depending on the substrate used.

Which fertilizer should I choose for my houseplants?

Start with the growing method. For plants in regular potting mix, a complete houseplant fertilizer or organic plant food is usually the easiest choice. For coco, LECA or semi-hydro, choose a feed made for that setup, because the substrate affects how nutrients and water behave around the roots.

Can I use regular plant food in LECA or semi-hydro?

For LECA, pon and other inert semi-hydro setups, a hydro or semi-hydro nutrient is usually the cleaner choice. Inert media do not add nutrition on their own, so the feed has to supply the plant through the water or reservoir. Some simple products can work for light use, but pH, EC and mineral balance matter more than in soil.

What is the difference between fertilizer and additives?

A complete fertilizer provides the main nutrients a plant uses for growth. Additives have narrower jobs, such as root support, enzyme activity, silicon, CalMag or pH correction. They can be helpful in the right setup, but most additives are not meant to replace a suitable base feed.

How often should I fertilize indoor plants?
