Syngonium wendlandii is a species Syngonium with dark velvety leaves and a pale silver-white midrib running through the centre of each blade. The plant combines a deep green surface, soft texture and one bright central line.
This Costa Rican species climbs from nodes, grips supports with aerial roots and can form a taller, more upright plant when given something to grow against. In smaller pots, pruning keeps the stems shorter and the base leafier.
A moss pole, bark support or slim trellis lets the nodes root and climb, while pruning keeps a smaller pot fuller. The leaves are thinner than they appear, so new growth can mark or distort if the plant dries too hard while a leaf is still unfurling.
The dark velvety surface can show scorch, water marks and mechanical damage more clearly than plain glossy foliage. Bright indirect light, steady warmth and an airy root zone reduce stress marks on new leaves.
Calcium oxalate crystals in Syngonium tissue can irritate the mouth and throat if chewed. Keep the plant away from pets and children, and avoid contact with sap around freshly cut stems.
Syngonium wendlandii was published by Schott in 1858 and is accepted as a species from Costa Rica. The genus name Syngonium refers to united floral organs, while wendlandii honours the German botanist Hermann Wendland. Its wet-tropical climbing habit connects with the need for support, warmth and even root moisture indoors.
