Why ‘Trileaf Wonder’ changes as it climbs

Syngonium podophyllum is a vine found from Mexico southwards through tropical America. In wet tropical vegetation, its stems attach to support with aerial roots and produce increasingly divided foliage as they mature.

‘Trileaf Wonder’ shows this development early through its clear three-part leaves, then adds further divisions on older supported growth.

Give this vigorous vine bright indirect light and a sturdy vertical support. Secure the stem near its aerial roots. Good contact helps later leaves grow larger and develop more divisions. Low light or loss of support may return growth to smaller, simpler shapes.

Water, substrate and climate

When the top layer has dried by 2 to 3 cm, water slowly across the pot and let every excess drop escape. Mix coir or peat with chunky bark and perlite so air can reach the roots. Give the vine a steady 18 to 27°C, moderate humidity and protection from anything below 15°C.

Feeding and managing length

Apply a dilute balanced fertiliser as the vine produces fresh leaves. Stop feeding when new growth slows. Extend the support before the stem reaches its top, or cut just above a node to start a new leader. Repot after roots have filled the container. For the best chance of rooting, choose a sturdy cutting that includes one node and an aerial root.

Problems with ‘Trileaf Wonder’

• New leaves lose the three-part form: Check indirect light, root health and contact with the support. A vine that stops climbing often returns to smaller, simpler foliage.
• The stem reaches the top and bends: Extend the support or cut just above a node to begin a new leader. Avoid forcing a stiff stem into a sharp turn.
• Leaves yellow in wet mix: Inspect for poor drainage and soft roots. Remove failed tissue and repot into an open substrate. Water fully if the pot is dry and light.
• Fresh growth shows scars or webbing: Thrips and mites target unfolding leaves. Cottony deposits indicate mealybugs; fixed bumps and stickiness suggest scale. Isolate the vine and treat the pest identified.
• Dry patches become soft: Old scorch remains firm and unchanged. Expanding translucent lesions need dry foliage, stronger airflow and removal of badly affected leaves.

Who first published Syngonium podophyllum, and what does the name mean?

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
