Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mango Allusion’ belongs to the Allusion group of cultivated Syngonium podophyllum. It was developed in horticulture from a species with a broad tropical American background.

S. podophyllum ranges from Mexico through Central America into tropical South America. It grows as a forest liana, rooting onto trees and replacing simple juvenile leaves with increasingly divided foliage as established shoots climb.

Care: Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mango Allusion’ prefers a moderate or brightly shaded position.

Roots and substrate: Use a fine but well-aerated aroid substrate suited to its relatively compact root system. Water once the surface and upper mix begin to dry, saturating the root ball before draining it fully. Do not leave water inside a cover pot. Take patterned node cuttings to preserve the cultivar; a cutting must include a growth bud at the node, and seedlings will not reliably reproduce the cultivar’s traits.

Peach-pink veins and warm-toned blades are expected, particularly on younger leaves. Diffuse yellowing accompanied by weak stems, dead patches or a wet failing root zone is not decorative colour. Inspect roots and the current light before assuming the plant needs fertiliser.

Rehydrate a light dry root ball completely when its roots remain firm. If a wet pot contains soft brown roots, remove them and repot the surviving vine in a looser mix. Black-speckled rough scars inside rolled leaves point to thrips; mite feeding forms much finer marks beneath the blade. Keep an affected vine apart from the collection and leave its foliage dry while a wet-looking patch is monitored.

Leaves may emerge brighter and mature greener, and lower winter light can soften the warm tones. Very low light also increases spacing, while hard direct sun scorches the pale surface. Make light changes gradually. Pigment cannot be restored directly with high feeding, and a healthy change with leaf age should not be treated as deficiency.

Why is it called Syngonium podophyllum?

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
