Syngonium podophyllum 'Mango allusion'

Selection history of Syngonium podophyllum 'Mango allusion'

'Mango allusion' was selected by Agri-Starts in Apopka, Florida, from variation arising during tissue-culture propagation. It is a tetraploid selection, meaning its cells have four sets of chromosomes.

Everyday care for Syngonium podophyllum 'Mango allusion'

Growth support: Guide the climbing stem onto a stable pole, plank or trellis early enough for the plant to attach and stay stable.

Keep temperatures around 18–27 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions below 15 °C. Give the broad foliage medium to bright indirect light, sheltered from harsh direct sun. As a practical humidity target, maintain roughly 50–60% humidity.

Use an airy mix that retains some moisture. Equal parts coir, vermiculite and perlite are one option for a container with drainage holes. Water Syngonium podophyllum 'Mango allusion' when the pot feels lighter and the mix around the roots has dried slightly while some moisture remains below the surface. For ‘Mango allusion’, a wooden stick can be used to check moisture deeper in the mix. Water thoroughly, drain and empty the collected water.

Feeding: Feed lightly with balanced houseplant fertiliser about monthly while new leaves are growing. Stop feeding when growth pauses. As drying slows, wait longer between waterings without letting the root ball dry completely.

Repot if they densely fill and circle the container, using a slightly larger pot and fresh mix.

Choose a healthy node-bearing section from ‘Mango allusion’; an aerial root on the node can speed establishment.

Common problems with Syngonium podophyllum 'Mango allusion' and how to solve them

• New curling with loss of firmness: Surface puckering is normal. If leaves become limp or curl more than usual, check moisture around the roots. Water dry mix thoroughly and drain; if the mix is wet, empty trapped water and pause watering. Move the plant away from cold draughts or dry heat, and check that it receives adequate indirect light.
• Wilting persists in wet mix: Inspect the roots. Leave firm roots intact while the mix dries slightly. Cut soft, decaying roots back to healthy tissue with disinfected scissors, disinfecting between cuts and afterwards. Discard the decay and affected mix. If healthy roots and a firm stem base remain, repot the remaining plant in fresh mix and a clean pot with drainage holes. Extensive decay of the roots or stem base may require discarding the plant.
• Dark spots that spread or turn soft: Expanding, wet-looking spots, torn-looking lesions or foul-smelling soft tissue can indicate disease, including bacterial infection. Separate the plant and keep its foliage dry. Keep water draining from its pot away from nearby plants. Remove an affected leaf with disinfected tools, bag it and disinfect the tools between cuts and afterwards. If the spots keep spreading, have the plant checked by a plant specialist.
• Pale stippling, bronzing or fine webs: Inspect leaf undersides or tap foliage over white paper to check for moving mites. Isolate an infested plant and inspect nearby plants. Rinse or wipe affected foliage weekly while mites remain. Bag heavily infested leaves and clean hands and tools.

Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mango allusion’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
