‘Berry Allusion’ comes from Syngonium podophyllum. The species grows naturally from Mexico across tropical America, where it climbs through warm, moist vegetation.

Young plants stay leafy near the base before their stems lengthen. Aerial roots then grip a support, and older vines may replace simple arrowheads with larger divided leaves.

Check the upper 2 to 3 cm before watering. Once dry, soak the root ball and drain it completely. Use an airy houseplant mix containing coir or peat, fine bark and perlite. The pot should lose some weight between waterings without becoming dry throughout.

Temperature and regular care

Keep the plant between 18 and 27°C, safely above 15°C. Normal household humidity in the 40 to 60% range is adequate. Apply a mild balanced feed as fresh leaves appear. Use less once the vine slows down. Repot once the roots occupy the pot or drying becomes unusually rapid. Nodal cuttings root in warmth, and pruning material can be used to start new plants.

• Young leaves show silver damage: Search for thrips around the centre and for mites on the undersides. Cottony clusters indicate mealybugs; brown fixed bumps indicate scale. Isolate, clean and treat the pest confirmed.
• Wet-looking marks appear: Keep water off the leaves, provide airflow and remove badly affected tissue. Spreading lesions need diagnosis before a disease treatment is selected.

The meaning and history of Syngonium podophyllum

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
