‘Pink Flecked’ comes from Syngonium podophyllum. This wet-tropical vine grows naturally from Mexico across tropical America and climbs with aerial roots.

The uneven pink marks belong to this variety. Flexible stems carry simple young leaves and can later produce larger divided foliage.

Light for clear pink spots

Bright indirect light keeps the stem compact and the pink marks clear against the soft green base. Hot sun can dry the marked areas. The vine may trail over the pot, or it can be attached to a support for larger leaves. Tip pruning encourages more patterned shoots.

Moisture without a heavy pot

Water after the upper 2 to 3 cm has dried and the container feels lighter. Wet the whole mix, drain it and empty the outer pot. Coir or peat with bark and perlite provides useful moisture and air. Repeated yellowing in a pot that remains heavy calls for a longer interval or a more open substrate.

Seasonal care and propagation

Keep it at 18 to 27°C. The humidity found in most homes is enough. Damp roots should never fall below 15°C. Use dilute fertiliser as new leaves form. Repot once roots fill the current pot. Take a cutting from a stem that has carried pink flecks on several leaves. One unusually colourful leaf does not show how later growth will look.

Common issues with ‘Pink Flecked’

• Healthy pink flecks are confused with thrips damage: The cultivar’s markings are fixed pink dots, streaks and patches. Thrips leave dry silver scars, black specks and worsening distortion around new leaves.
• The stem stretches: Increase bright indirect light and prune a weak tip above a healthy node. A support can encourage larger foliage without sacrificing the pattern.
• Yellow leaves appear in a heavy pot: Check drainage and inspect for soft roots. Cut away damaged roots and replace the old substrate with a fresh aerated blend. If the container is light and dry, water it thoroughly.
• Edges turn brown: Review direct sun, prolonged drought, dry air and fertiliser salts. Correct the cause and assess new leaves because marked tissue will remain.
• Spots become soft and enlarge: These are not normal pink markings. Isolate the vine, keep the foliage dry, improve airflow and remove affected leaves cleanly.

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
