Terrarium Base Mix with Gravel, Soil & Activated Carbon – core layering materials for small terrariums
Terrarium Base Mix with Gravel, Soil & Activated Carbon is designed for simple humid glass builds. It gives the core layers for a planted base while leaving room for moss, stones, wood and small plants.
At a glance
- Gravel: forms the mineral base layer
- Soil: creates the planting zone for small roots
- Activated carbon: use as a thin layer in enclosed glass
- Small setups: best for compact jars and terrarium kits
In use
Closed containers need far less water than open pots. Start with controlled moisture and adjust by airing or lightly misting rather than flooding the base.
Key details
Use plants that tolerate humidity and small root space. Succulents and cacti generally do not belong in closed humid terrariums.
Setup tips
This mix is built around structure first. Use it as a complete potting mix, or blend it into a base soil to adjust airflow and drying speed.
Watering should match the pot size and root mass. Check moisture at depth and adjust your routine after the first few cycles.
More to know
- Moisten dry components before potting so the mix settles evenly.
- Choose pot size for the root ball, not for the top growth.
- Top-dress with the same mix to reduce surface compaction.
