Horticultural Sand for gritty texture and extra weight
Horticultural sand is a coarse, washed mineral additive used to add weight and gritty texture to custom plant substrates. It can be useful in cactus mixes, bonsai media, terrariums and larger pots where a very light blend may shift, float or feel too soft around roots.
Use coarse sand when fine soil needs grit
- Adding grit to cactus and succulent mixes where coarse sand is appropriate
- Increasing weight in shallow bonsai or decorative pots
- Custom substrates that need mineral texture rather than more organic material
Keep particle size coarse enough to avoid sealing the mix
Blend sand evenly through the mix and avoid fine building sand, which can compact and reduce airflow. Sand adds weight more than pore space; when you need more aeration, use more porous mineral components such as pumice, perlite or Lava Rock Granules.
