Kroenleinia grusonii, still widely recognized as golden barrel cactus, begins as a near-perfect sphere and slowly matures into a larger barrel lined with strong ribs and dense golden spines. Even relatively young plants read as structural focal points, and container-grown specimens can eventually reach around 60 cm across if given enough time and light.
Full sun or the brightest possible indoor exposure is essential, along with a gritty cactus mix, low humidity, and thorough watering only after the soil has dried completely. In winter, water very sparingly to reduce the risk of rot. The species is non-toxic, but the spines are formidable and require careful handling. Mature plants may flower with yellow blooms at the crown, though this usually takes many years in cultivation.
