Syngonium podophyllum 'Yellow neon'

Origin of Syngonium podophyllum 'Yellow neon'

'Yellow neon' is grown as a Syngonium podophyllum cultivar, although its breeder and introduction date are still unclear.

Natural Syngonium podophyllum populations occur from Mexico to tropical America.

Everyday care for Syngonium podophyllum 'Yellow neon'

• Light for the foliage: Bright filtered light supports the yellow-green colour. Protect the leaves from harsh direct sun.
• Watering and potting mix: Grow it in free-draining houseplant mix with clear drainage. Rewater when the pot feels lighter and the upper mix has dried slightly while some moisture remains deeper down; wet the root ball evenly and drain it fully.
• Trailing or climbing stems: Let longer stems hang or train them loosely onto a support. Clean pruning cuts can be used to keep shorter juvenile growth.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures around 18–27 °C and avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C. Aim for 50–60% humidity.
• Apply a light feed during active growth. When growth stops, pause feeding and extend the interval between waterings as the mix takes longer to dry.
• Repotting: Give the roots a little more room once they tightly fill the pot, moving up only one pot size.
• Propagation: Propagate from a healthy stem cutting with a node; a node that already has an aerial root generally establishes more readily.

Common problems with Syngonium podophyllum 'Yellow neon' and how to solve them

• New wilt with wet mix: Empty standing water and pause watering. If wilt persists, inspect roots. Firm roots can remain intact as the mix dries slightly. If the plant has soft, collapsing roots, isolate it and keep water draining from its pot away from nearby plants. Cut decay back to healthy tissue with disinfected scissors, disinfecting between cuts and afterwards. Discard rot and affected mix; repot the remaining plant in fresh mix and a new pot with drainage holes. You may need to discard the plant if extensive decay affects both roots and stems.
• Stippling with fine webs: Inspect beneath leaves with magnification and tap foliage over white paper for moving mites. Separate infested plants and inspect those nearby. Rinse affected foliage weekly while mites remain, bag heavily infested leaves and wash hands and tools. Check new leaves for returning mites.
• Fluffy white wax or sticky deposits: Check leaf undersides, stem joints and the base for mealybugs. Isolate an affected plant, rinse foliage and remove visible insects with tweezers or a damp swab. Recheck weekly and repeat removal. Persistent colonies may need a treatment labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants; follow repeat timing and plant-safety precautions.

Syngonium podophyllum ‘Yellow neon’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
