Syngonium podophyllum 'Strawberry Ice' is a rare and unpredictable variegated cultivar known for its dramatic blotches of pink, white, mint, and dark green. Each leaf is a surprise – some are heavily marbled with pastel tones, others show bright pink speckles that resemble strawberry swirls. The arrow-shaped foliage emerges on soft pink petioles, creating a striking contrast even at a young stage. Compact and eye-catching, this cultivar stays manageable in size while offering bold color and variation, making it one of the most sought-after Syngoniums among collectors.
This cultivar is derived from Syngonium podophyllum, a species native to rainforests in Central and South America. 'Strawberry Ice' is a mutation developed in cultivation and does not occur in the wild. In its natural context, Syngonium spreads along the forest floor before climbing trees and other supports. Indoors, this cultivar prefers stable humidity and warm conditions to maintain leaf quality and steady growth. As with all Syngoniums, it contains calcium oxalate and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
‘Strawberry Ice’ is a slow-to-moderate grower and benefits from consistent light, warmth, and humidity. It thrives best when left undisturbed and rotated occasionally to ensure even growth. Since it’s a chimera, each new leaf brings a surprise – some may be fully pink, others marbled or even fully green. Understanding its rainforest origin helps you fine-tune your care: steady conditions, no harsh sun, and well-drained substrate.
The genus name “Syngonium” is derived from the Greek “syn” (together) and “gonium” (seed or reproductive part), referring to the fused floral structures. “Podophyllum” translates to “foot-shaped leaf.” ‘Strawberry Ice’ is an unregistered cultivar name that refers to the strawberry-toned variegation pattern. It’s widely circulated among collectors and considered one of the most color-diverse Syngoniums in cultivation.
