The tropical roots of ‘Neon Robusta’

This pink variety belongs to Syngonium podophyllum, a climbing species found naturally from Mexico across tropical America. It grows through sheltered wet-tropical vegetation and attaches at the stem nodes.

‘Neon Robusta’ changes through rose, copper and green shades. Its arrowhead leaves can become larger and more divided as the vine matures.

Light for pink and bronze growth

Bright indirect light keeps the newest leaves compact and clear in colour. Midday sun can burn shell-pink tissue. A very dim position speeds the shift towards green and lengthens the stem. Several shoots can be kept low, or one may be trained upward.

Water and temperature

Check for 2 to 3 cm of dry mix at the surface and confirm that the container has lost some weight. Water evenly, allow full drainage and empty the outer pot. An open substrate with coir or peat, bark and perlite works well. Keep temperatures between 18 and 27°C, safely above 15°C, with moderate humidity.

Feeding, pruning and repotting

Use a dilute balanced fertiliser when new leaves are forming. Flush mineral deposits from the mix with plain water. Cut a long stem just above a node to encourage branching, and root the healthy removed section if desired. Repot when the roots have filled the container or the plant begins drying unusually quickly.

Troubleshooting ‘Neon Robusta’

• Pink leaves become greener: Some greening is normal as foliage ages. Weak light can also dull new colour and lengthen the stem. Move the plant to brighter filtered light and judge the next leaves.
• Fresh pink tissue develops dry patches: Direct sun, severe drought and fertiliser salts are common causes. Protect the plant from midday sun and rinse deposits from the substrate.
• The vine droops: Check pot weight. Water and drain a dry light root ball. If the mix is damp and roots are soft or foul-smelling, remove failed tissue and repot.
• New growth is distorted: Look for thrips, mites, mealybugs and scale around the unfolding leaves. Separate the plant and treat the identified pest according to the label.
• Soft lesions appear: Isolate the vine, keep leaves dry and provide airflow. Remove badly affected foliage and seek diagnosis if spotting continues.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Syngonium podophyllum: name and meaning

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
