Syngonium podophyllum ‘Neon Robusta’

Cultivated origin of Syngonium podophyllum ‘Neon Robusta’

Randall E. Strode discovered ‘Neon Robusta’ in Apopka, Florida, in 2003 as a naturally occurring branch mutation of Syngonium ‘Neon’.

The new selection was subsequently propagated through tissue culture.

How to care for Syngonium podophyllum 'Neon Robusta' at home

Support: Let longer stems trail, or fasten them loosely to a moss pole for climbing growth.

Light and climate: Provide bright filtered light and temperatures around 18–27 °C, away from cold draughts and harsh direct sun. Long periods below 15 °C call for a warmer position. Room humidity around 50–60% suits indoor growth; a humidifier can help when the air is dry.

Potting mix: Use free-draining houseplant mix in a container with drainage holes.

Let the mix dry slightly around the roots between waterings. Water when the pot feels lighter and some moisture remains below the surface; use a wooden stick to check deeper in the mix when needed. Water throughout the pot, let excess drain and empty the saucer or outer pot.

Feeding and slower growth: Apply diluted balanced fertiliser about monthly while new leaves are growing. Pause feeding when growth pauses and extend the interval between waterings as drying time lengthens.

Repotting: Repot once a dense root mass fills the container or roots emerge through the drainage holes. Use fresh mix and a pot only slightly wider than the root ball.

For propagation, choose a firm Syngonium stem section that includes a node; an aerial root at that node can support establishment.

Problems and solutions for Syngonium podophyllum 'Neon Robusta'

• New wilt in persistently wet mix: Empty standing water and pause watering. If wilting continues, check the roots. Leave firm roots undisturbed while the mix dries slightly. If roots are soft or collapsing, separate the plant and keep water draining from its pot away from nearby plants. Cut decay back to healthy tissue with disinfected tools, disinfecting between cuts and afterwards. Discard decay and affected mix; repot the remaining plant in fresh mix and a new pot with drainage. You may need to discard the plant if rot extensively affects both the roots and the stems.
• Fine stippling and webbing: Check leaf undersides with magnification or tap a leaf over white paper for moving mites. Isolate an infested plant and inspect those nearby. Rinse affected foliage weekly while mites remain, bag the most heavily infested leaves and clean hands and tools afterwards. Check new leaves for returning mites.
• White fluff or sticky deposits: Mealybugs leave white wax and may produce sticky honeydew. Inspect leaf undersides, stem joints and the base. Separate an infested plant, rinse foliage and remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Recheck weekly and repeat removal. Persistent colonies may need a treatment labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants; follow its repeat intervals and plant-safety instructions.

Syngonium podophyllum ‘Neon Robusta’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Syngonium podophyllum: name and meaning

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Syngonium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott first described Syngonium podophyllum in 1851 in Botanische Zeitung (Berlin), volume 9, page 85.
