Where ‘Pink Spot’ comes from

‘Pink Spot’ belongs to Syngonium podophyllum, a tropical American vine that grows naturally from Mexico southwards. Roots along the stem help it climb other plants.

Dark rose spots and pale leaf bases set this variety apart. A mature vine on a support may still produce the large divided leaves seen in wild arrowhead plants.

Use bright indirect light to keep the rose spots distinct and support the green tissue. Direct sun can scorch cream-green or blushed areas. Flexible stems can trail or climb, and selective pruning encourages additional patterned growth from lower nodes.

Knowing when to water

Let the top 2 to 3 cm dry and check that the pot feels lighter. Water the root ball thoroughly and allow it to drain. Use a loose mix of bark, perlite and coir or peat so water can drain away from the roots. Reduce watering when the vine slows.

Climate, feeding and cuttings

Maintain 18 to 27°C and moderate humidity, with protection below 15°C. Apply dilute fertiliser as new leaves appear and rinse away visible salt deposits. Repot after roots occupy the container. For a cutting, choose a healthy section with one node from a stem with clear dark rose spots. Leave enough green on it to keep growing.

• Dark rose marks remain crisp and stable: They belong to the cultivar. Concern is justified when a mark becomes soft, translucent or steadily larger.
• Pale leaves scorch: Direct sun can leave bleached dry areas, especially on cream-green or blushed tissue. Move the plant into filtered light and judge recovery through new growth.
• The vine droops in damp substrate: Check the roots for softness and stale smell. Remove failed roots and use fresh airy mix. Water deeply if the root ball is genuinely dry.
• New leaves carry silver damage: Look for thrips, mites, mealybugs and scale at the growing point and on undersides. Isolate, clean and follow a treatment label for the identified pest.
• Soft spots continue expanding: Keep the foliage dry, improve airflow and remove the most affected leaves with clean tools.

About the name Syngonium podophyllum

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
