Syngonium podophyllum ‘Mottled’ is a cultivated variegated selection maintained by vegetative propagation.

The species is a humid-forest climbing vine native across tropical America from Mexico into northern and central South America. Its rooting nodes help it climb and also allow detached stem pieces to establish, contributing to naturalisation in warm regions beyond its native range.

When Mottled Syngonium Has Problems

Stable cream or light-green marbling in normally shaped leaves is consistent with ‘Mottled’. New rings, mosaic-like changes across several shoots, persistent deformation or progressive stunting need closer investigation. Keep this vine separate from nearby plants. Seek professional plant-health advice rather than assuming the changes are variegation. Thrips can also distort leaves, but their rough scars, black specks and insects provide clear signs.

A change in the colour pattern can produce all-green growth that overtakes the mottled stems. Prune back to a balanced node. Very pale weak sections can die because they lack enough chlorophyll.
