Syngonium chiapense

Natural range and habitat of Syngonium chiapense

Syngonium chiapense is native to Mexico and Guatemala, where it grows as a climber in a warm, wet tropical climate.

How to care for Syngonium chiapense at home

Plan for climbing stems as the plant develops. Install a pole or other stable support and secure the stems with loose ties; keep the leaf stalks free. Young trailing growth can also be grown in a hanging pot.

Give it medium to bright indirect light and keep the plant warm and stable, away from cold draughts. 50–60% humidity can be tolerated; steadier humidity and gentle airflow suit new growth.

Plant in an airy mix that retains some moisture and a container with drainage holes. For Syngonium chiapense, equal parts coir, vermiculite and perlite are one workable mix. Water when the pot feels lighter and the mix around the roots has dried slightly, with some moisture remaining. Check with a wooden stick when necessary. Water thoroughly, drain and empty the saucer.

Temperature: A range of 18–27 °C suits Syngonium chiapense. Keep prolonged exposure below 15 °C to a minimum.

Feeding and slower growth: While new leaves are growing, feed about monthly with a light application of balanced fertiliser. Pause feeding when growth stops, and water less often if the mix takes longer to dry.

Repotting: Repot when roots densely fill the container, using a pot only a little wider than the root ball.

Take a healthy piece of stem with at least one node for this plant; a node with an aerial root is especially useful.

Common problems with Syngonium chiapense and how to solve them

• Long, weak stems: Light may be too low. Move the plant into brighter indirect light and watch whether new stems grow more strongly.
• Broad leaves wilt in a dry pot: Dry mix around the roots indicates a need for water. Moisten the entire root ball and let excess water escape before returning the pot to its cover.
• Wilting continues in wet mix: Check for trapped water first and empty it. If the plant keeps declining, lift the root ball and look for soft or collapsing roots. Cut affected roots back to healthy tissue with a disinfected blade, disinfecting between cuts and afterwards. Discard decay and affected mix, then repot the remaining plant in fresh mix and a clean container with drainage holes. Firm roots can remain undisturbed while the mix dries slightly.
• White wax in leaf joints: Mealybugs can collect around the leaf bases. Isolate an affected plant, remove small colonies with a damp swab and clear dead foliage. Check the joints and leaf undersides weekly; repeat removal when needed. Consider discarding the plant only if it is heavily infested and badly damaged.

Syngonium chiapense is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Syngonium chiapense first published, and what does it mean?

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name chiapense means “from Chiapas”, the Mexican state represented in the plant’s native range.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Syngonium in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Eizi Matuda first described Syngonium chiapense in 1950 in Revista de la Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural, volume 11, page 94.
