Allow the upper 2 to 3 cm of substrate to dry, then soak the root ball and drain it completely. This species handles a short dry spell. When fresh leaves are appearing, water before the whole potting mix dries out. Use a loose mix of coir or peat, fine bark and perlite.

Keep the plant above 15°C. A range of 18 to 27°C suits it well. Humidity around 40 to 60% is adequate when airflow is gentle. Apply a dilute balanced feed as new leaves form. Wait until roots fill the pot before repotting. A longer vine does not always need a larger pot. Root a cutting with at least one healthy node; a leaf without a node cannot produce a new vine.

Common issues with ‘Little Star’

• The tiny star-shaped growth becomes stretched: Long gaps and weaker pale centres usually indicate insufficient light. Move the plant to brighter indirect light and prune above a healthy node to restart compact growth.
• Later leaves stay simple: Mature divisions are more likely after the vine climbs. Reattach the stem to a slim support and give the aerial roots contact. New supported leaves show the response.
• Narrow leaves droop: A dry light pot needs thorough watering. Yellowing in damp substrate points to root stress. Improve drainage and remove soft roots before repotting.
• Leaf tips blacken or new blades stick: Cold, severe drying and very low humidity can interrupt expansion. Restore stable warmth and moisture, then leave the folded leaf to open on its own.
• Scars or webbing appear: Thrips and mites are easiest to find around new leaves and their undersides. Isolate the vine, rinse visible pests and use a labelled treatment if they return. Soft spreading spots need dry foliage and clean removal.

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The Latin species name angustatum means “narrowed”, referring to the slim segments of mature leaves.
