Schismatoglottis wallichii is a wet-tropical forest aroid with rhizomatous to stoloniferous growth and green leaves held on petioles. New growth rises from the base, gradually forming a low, spreading plant.
This species comes from warm, moist forest habitats from southern Indo-China to western Malesia. Indoors, it needs warmth, humidity, filtered light and a substrate that stays moist without turning stagnant.
Schismatoglottis wallichii produces petiolate leaves from a basal rhizomatous structure. Leaf shape can vary, and new shoots continue from the base as the plant broadens.
Its stoloniferous tendency means the base can slowly widen in the pot. A mix that holds some moisture while staying open around the roots gives new shoots a better root zone than heavy, compacted soil.
Like other aroids, Schismatoglottis wallichii should be kept out of reach of pets and small children. Chewing plant tissue can irritate the mouth and throat.
Schismatoglottis wallichii is an accepted Araceae species published in 1893 in Flora of British India. The species epithet honours Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist and plant collector closely linked with South Asian botanical work.
