Philodendron panduriforme is an Araceae species from northern South America, known for mature leaves that develop a fiddle-shaped outline. Young leaves can start simpler, then gain the narrower middle and wider upper and lower portions that give the species its pandurate shape.
The plant climbs by producing aerial roots at the nodes, with dark green leaves held along lengthening stems. Bright filtered light, warmth, steady moisture and a vertical support help the foliage develop its mature outline over time.
Grow Philodendron panduriforme on a pole, plank or other vertical support while the plant is still juvenile. A stable climbing surface helps the stem attach and continue upward as the leaves become more defined.
Philodendron panduriforme is associated with wet tropical forest, where warmth, humidity and filtered light support steady climbing growth. Indoors, an airy root zone and consistent moisture help prevent stalled growth before the adult leaf form develops.
Philodendron panduriforme contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, so leaves, petioles and stems should stay away from pets and children that may chew plant material.
Philodendron was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode 3: 780 in 1829, and the genus name comes from Greek-derived roots meaning “tree-loving.” Philodendron panduriforme was published by Karl Sigismund Kunth in Enumeratio Plantarum 3: 51 in 1841. The epithet panduriforme means fiddle-shaped, referring to the outline of the mature leaves.
