Homalomena rubescens ‘Black Emerald’

Origin and habitat

Homalomena rubescens has a broad native range from the eastern Himalaya through southern China to mainland South-East Asia. It grows on the floor of warm tropical and subtropical forest in moist, humus-rich ground. Loose organic matter keeps air spaces open around the roots even while the ground remains damp.

Care

• Position and light: Use medium to bright indirect light and keep the plant out of strong direct sun. A persistently dim position slows growth.
• When to water: As the top of the substrate starts to dry, water the complete root ball and let excess escape. The lower mix can remain lightly moist, but never stagnant or dry for an extended period.
• Growing medium: The roots suit a loose aroid mix that remains lightly moisture-retentive without becoming compact or waterlogged.
• Warmth and humidity: A warm 18–27°C and moderately humid to humid air suit this plant. Protect it from cold airflow and direct sources of heat.
• Nutrients: Provide dilute feed in response to active growth rather than the calendar. When leaves continue developing in winter, continue at a lower frequency.
• Container and roots: Move up only one container size when the root ball and basal growth become crowded. Preserve the existing planting level.

Common issues

A new leaf opens greener than the older foliage: Fresh leaves can deepen in colour as they harden. Wait until the leaf has fully matured before treating the difference as a problem.

A yellow leaf begins to soften at the stalk: Wet, cool substrate may be damaging the roots or crown. Check drainage immediately and inspect the base for soft tissue.

Pale specks appear on the dark leaves: Spider mites may be feeding beneath the leaves. Isolate the plant, treat both leaf surfaces, and repeat the treatment at the interval stated on the product label.

Pets and calcium oxalate: Homalomena rubescens ‘Black Emerald’

Keep this aroid away from cats, dogs and small children. Biting the plant can release calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and throat.

The reddish name behind ‘Black Emerald’

rubescens means becoming reddish and refers to the red-toned petioles. Homalomena comes from an old, apparently mistaken translation of a Malay plant name into Greek words meaning flat and moon; it was not coined as a literal description of the plant.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established Homalomena in 1832 in Schott and Stephan Endlicher’s Meletemata Botanica (p. 20). Carl Sigismund Kunth published the current combination Homalomena rubescens in 1841 in Enumeratio Plantarum (vol. 3, p. 57).
