Ficus Potting Mix

• 1.5 parts Coco Coir – retains moisture while keeping the mix aerated.
• 1 part Worm Castings – organic, slow-release nutrients for steady growth.
• 1 part Coconut Husk Chips – provides chunky structure and extra airflow.
• 1 part Perlite – improves drainage and helps reduce compaction.
• 0.5 part Horticultural Sand – gives weight and mineral texture; use coarse sand only, because fine sand can reduce pore space.
• A little bit of Activated Carbon – brings a small porous carbon fraction in damp mixes; it does not fix poor watering or poor structure.
• A little bit of lava gravel – brings mineral texture and long-lasting structure.
• Organic nutrients: support steady, steady Ficus growth over time.

To mix your own: use 10 parts total following the ratios above. Add slightly more sand for a denser, more anchoring soil, or more perlite if you need even faster drainage in low-light rooms or heavy pots.

• When to repot: repot when roots circle the pot, when the plant becomes unstable, or when old soil stays wet for a long time and no longer drains well.
• Prepare the plant: gently loosen the plant from its pot and remove loose, tired substrate without tearing functional roots.
• Inspect roots: trim dead or rotten roots with sterilised scissors. Rinse only if old soil is compacted, contaminated or difficult to remove by hand.
• Set up the pot: choose a pot with drainage holes and add enough Ficus Soil Mix so the root ball sits at the right height.
• Backfill carefully: fill around the root ball and press lightly to stabilise the plant without compacting the substrate.
• First watering: water thoroughly so the soil settles around the roots, then let the upper layer dry before watering again.
• Ongoing care: keep Ficus in bright, indirect light and avoid cold draughts. Check moisture in the upper part of the pot rather than watering on a fixed schedule.

Consistent watering and a stable environment usually make more difference to Ficus health than frequent repotting; in this mix the structure normally stays usable for several years.

• Dry matter: about 31 %.
• Water retention capacity: around 64 %, giving a moist but not saturated root zone.
• Structural stability: typically 3–4 years indoors before coco coir, husk and bark gradually break down and drainage slows.
• Bioactive? Yes – suitable for bioactive setups with appropriate fauna.
• Pet considerations: No – contains fertiliser, perlite and activated carbon and is not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
