Horticultural sand – coarse mineral grit for custom substrate recipes
Horticultural sand gives a mix extra mineral texture and weight. It is most useful in measured amounts, especially where a potting blend feels too soft or too light.
What it does in use
- Coarse grit: changes texture without turning to sludge
- Extra weight: helps small pots and top-heavy plants sit more firmly
- Mix adjustment: pairs with soil, bark, pumice or perlite
- Small doses: too much sand can make a pot dense
Starting ratio
Use small amounts in succulent blends, bonsai recipes or custom mixes that need more grit. Combine it with true structure ingredients such as pumice, lava rock, bark or perlite so air spaces remain open.

Very fine sand can fill pores and reduce airflow. Use a coarse horticultural grade and keep the total proportion modest for indoor containers.
