Epipremnum aureum is native to Mo‘orea and grows as a wet-tropical climber.

University of Florida researchers developed ‘Pearls and Jade’ from ‘Marble Queen’ material as a compact, highly patterned cultivar.

Protecting pale foliage on Epipremnum ‘Pearls and Jade’

Bright indirect light supports the compact green, cream and white pattern. Introduce direct sun gradually because pale tissue scorches sooner than green areas.

• Watering: Drench the pot after the upper section of the mix has dried and allow complete drainage.
• Root mix: Use a modest pot with an airy aroid substrate and flush the mix thoroughly from time to time.
• Propagation and pattern: Use node cuttings from patterned stems and prune a persistent all-green shoot back to variegated growth.
• Habit: The vine can trail compactly or climb a textured support. Regular pruning keeps a fuller pot, while aerial-root contact can increase leaf size.

Moderate humidity, gentle airflow and temperatures around 18–28 °C are suitable. Feed lightly during active growth.

Green and grey-green speckles inside the white areas are a defining part of this cultivar.

• Green shoot: Cut it back when it continues without the cream-and-white pattern and begins to dominate.
• Nearly white shoot: Keep it connected to greener tissue; remove it if growth becomes weak or stalls.
• Crisp white margin: Restore steady moisture, reduce abrupt hot sun and flush mineral buildup from a healthy pot with free drainage.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Epipremnum aureum: name and publication history

Epipremnum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with premnon, meaning tree trunk, referring to the way the vine attaches to a support.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Epipremnum in 1857 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 5, page 45.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described it as Pothos aureus in 1880 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 27, page 69. George Sydney Bunting later placed it in Epipremnum as Epipremnum aureum in 1964 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 50, page 28.
