Dieffenbachia 'Reflector' has dark green leaves with fine lighter speckling and a pale central vein. The leaves stay mostly dark green, with brighter markings across each blade.
Young plants stay full and leafy. With age, the stems thicken into short canes and the plant takes on a more upright shape. Wipe the broad leaves regularly so dust does not build up and pests are easier to spot early.
Dieffenbachia seguine belongs to Araceae, the aroid family, and is native from the Caribbean into tropical South America. Indoors, it needs filtered light, warmth and a mix that keeps air around the roots.
The name Dieffenbachia honours Joseph Dieffenbach, who was associated with the Schönbrunn gardens in Vienna.
Good indirect light helps the stems stay shorter and the crown grow evenly. Low light can stretch the stems and make the crown lean, while strong direct sun can leave dry tan patches on the leaves. Dust can dull the leaves and make pests harder to spot along the midrib and petiole joints.
Fresh cuts can release irritating Dieffenbachia sap. Wear gloves for pruning, repotting and stem cuttings, and keep the plant out of reach of pets and children.
A mature Dieffenbachia may produce a small aroid-style flower, but 'Reflector' is mainly kept indoors for its dark speckled leaves, pale central vein and upright cane-like stems.
