Dieffenbachia ‘Crocodile’

A textured-leaf horticultural selection

‘Crocodile’ is a horticultural Dieffenbachia selected for a strongly raised, textured ridge beneath mature leaves. Dieffenbachia species originate in tropical America, where many grow as upright broad-leaved plants beneath taller vegetation in warm, moisture-rich conditions. ‘Crocodile’ is grown as a cultivar without a species name.

Light

Give ‘Crocodile’ medium to strong filtered light near an east-facing window or screened from a brighter exposure. Good light keeps the canes firm and the textured leaves close together. It can take a little gentle morning direct sun once acclimated; hot midday sun catches the raised surface and may leave bleached or brown areas. Low light produces longer petioles, a looser crown and smaller leaves, though it does not create or remove the cultivar’s textured surface.

Watering

Water when the top 2–4 cm is dry and the mix beneath remains slightly moist. Soak the whole root ball and drain it fully. Broad textured leaves use water steadily in warmth, but the fibrous roots still need air between thorough waterings. Prolonged dryness causes drooping and brittle edges; constant wetness weakens roots and the lower cane. Sun, heat, dense roots and terracotta speed drying. Cool air, shade, plastic and excess substrate make the pot stay wet longer.

Substrate and roots

The root zone should be moisture-retentive and springy, with fine bark and perlite or pumice maintaining air spaces through repeated watering. A quality aroid or houseplant mix is suitable if it is not excessively coarse. Compacted fine material can stay stagnant around the cane, and large chunks may leave dry gaps around young roots. Keep the stem bases at surface level and flush dissolved salts before a visible crust builds.

Temperature

Maintain 19–27 °C and avoid sustained temperatures below 15–16 °C. Cold slows the roots before the broad canopy stops losing water, which can leave the plant limp in wet substrate. Protect it from cold windows, open-door draughts and air-conditioning. Keep it out of radiator or fan currents that dry the ridged leaf surface unevenly.

Humidity and airflow

Average household humidity is workable. Moderate humidity meaningfully improves expansion of the puckered blades and reduces crisp tips, especially in heated rooms. Pair it with gentle circulation so moisture does not linger in folds or around emerging leaves. Misting is not needed and repeated droplets can collect dust in the textured surface.

Fertilising

Use a complete balanced fertiliser at one-quarter to one-half strength every four to six weeks when new leaves and roots are developing. Let light, temperature and water use determine reductions. Continue lightly beyond summer if the plant remains warm and active, and pause during a genuine slowdown. Avoid heavy feeding in compacted substrate; salts can damage fine roots and leave brown marks across the raised leaf surface.

Repotting

Repot if roots encircle the pot, grow from multiple holes, lift the canes or make moisture distribution unreliable. Replace a mix that has lost its springy texture or drains much more slowly than before. Choose a pot 2–4 cm wider and preserve the fibrous core. Ease apart only severe outer coils and replant the cane bases at their former level during a warm active phase.

Pruning, handling and leaf care

The textured leaves tolerate a gentle rinse better than repeated wiping. Support each blade, use low-pressure lukewarm water and let the ridges dry with airflow; do not scrub or apply leaf polish. Turn the pot gradually so new leaves face the window without twisting their petioles. Remove only fully spent lower leaves. If a cane becomes bare or too tall, cut above a node to encourage lower shoots, keeping the remaining crown balanced.

Reading unusual leaves on ‘Crocodile’

• Mature leaves feel or look more textured underneath: A raised, ridged midrib on the underside is a normal ‘Crocodile’ feature, not swelling or pest damage. Investigate only if the tissue also becomes soft, wet-looking or develops irregular dead patches.
• Small wet-looking spots enlarge or merge: A spreading leaf spot is more likely when foliage stays wet with little air movement. Keep the plant away from neighbours, remove badly affected leaves with disinfected tools, keep water off the foliage and improve gentle airflow.
• A leaf stalk or blade suddenly collapses after chilling: Cold glass, a draught or a sharp temperature drop can injure Dieffenbachia tissue. Move the plant to a stable warm position and remove only material that has become fully soft or dead.
• Sticky leaves or fixed brown bumps appear near the veins: Check stems and leaf undersides for scale insects. Wipe off visible pests, isolate the plant and repeat a suitable treatment using our scale guide.

Is Dieffenbachia ‘Crocodile’ safe for pets?

This plant is toxic to cats and dogs because its tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing can trigger intense irritation of the mouth, drooling, swelling, vomiting and trouble swallowing. Keep Dieffenbachia ‘Crocodile’ out of reach and contact a veterinarian promptly if any part is chewed.

The texture behind the name

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established Dieffenbachia in the Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode in 1829, naming it for Joseph Dieffenbach, head gardener at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace. The cultivar name ‘Crocodile’ refers to the textured lower midrib, often compared to crocodile skin.
