Dieffenbachia 'Big Ben' has broad green-and-cream leaves on upright stems. As it matures, new leaves develop higher on the cane and more of the lower stem becomes visible.
A heavier pot helps keep the plant steady as the upper leaves develop. Turning the pot regularly helps the stem grow more evenly.
Dieffenbachia is a tropical American aroid genus with broad leaves and thick stems. In 'Big Ben', the stem becomes more visible as the plant matures.
A firm root ball, a weighty pot and light from more than one side all help the plant stay upright.
The stems and leaves of Dieffenbachia 'Big Ben' contain irritating sap. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children, especially where taller stems could be nibbled or broken. After pruning or staking, wash your hands and clean any tools that touched cut tissue.
Dieffenbachia is named after Joseph Dieffenbach of the Schönbrunn palace gardens in Vienna. Dieffenbachia 'Big Ben' stays steadier in a weighty pot and benefits from regular turning.
