Dieffenbachia 'Amy' grows upright, with broad glossy leaves patterned in green, cream and soft yellow. New leaves are produced from the top of the cane, while older lower leaves may yellow and drop as the stem becomes more visible.
The pale parts brown more easily than the green parts. Direct sun, dry patches in the root ball or fertiliser salts in the substrate can leave marks on the cream-coloured areas. Give soft light and keep root moisture steady.
Dieffenbachia belongs to Araceae, the aroid family. The genus comes from tropical America, and many dumb cane houseplants belong to this wider cultivated Dieffenbachia group, including plants related to Dieffenbachia seguine.
Dieffenbachia 'Amy' grows with a thick cane-like stem, broad leaves arranged along the stem and leaf bases that partly wrap around it. As the plant matures, the lower stem may become more visible.
A mature plant may flower with the typical aroid flower structure, though this is uncommon indoors.
Dieffenbachia 'Amy' has irritating sap with calcium oxalate crystals. Sap from cut or broken tissue can irritate skin and eyes, and ingested plant parts can irritate the mouth. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children, wear gloves when pruning and clean tools after cutting.
The genus name Dieffenbachia honours Joseph Dieffenbach of the Schönbrunn palace gardens in Vienna. Dieffenbachia 'Amy' is an upright plant with broad cream-green leaves produced from the top of the stem.
