Caladium 'Tapestry' has broad, heart-shaped leaves with natural variation across the leaf surface. The blades combine pale areas, green edges, darker spotting and pink to magenta-red veins. Some leaves show more pale colour, while others show more green edging or red-pink veins.
The plant grows from a tuber and produces upright petioles while conditions are warm. A firm, well-rooted tuber can produce more leaves, while cool substrate or uneven watering can slow new growth.
Leaves rise from the tuber on upright petioles, the stalks that hold the leaves. The broad blades have a heart-shaped outline, with red-pink veins running through pale and green areas. The pattern changes naturally from leaf to leaf.
Fuller growth depends on tuber size, visible growing points, warmth and steady moisture. Once growth slows, reduce watering and keep the resting tuber much drier.
Caladiums can be restarted from firm tubers with visible growing points. Divided tuber sections need a visible growing point and should dry before planting. Older plants may occasionally flower; this cultivar is grown for its patterned leaves.
Place Caladium 'Tapestry' out of reach of pets and children. If eaten, leaves, petioles or tuber tissue can irritate the mouth and stomach. Sap from cut parts may irritate sensitive skin.
The genus Caladium belongs to tropical American aroids and its name is linked to Malay keladi. Tapestry™ was released by the University of Florida as 'UF-172', from a cross between 'White Christmas' and 'Red Flash'. 'Tapestry' refers to the mixed pale, green and pink-red leaf pattern.
