Caladium 'Spring Fling' has broad, heart-shaped leaves in a soft rose-pink tone. Green veins run through each blade, and a fine green edge outlines the leaf. The leaves rise on slender petioles from the tuber, so the plant forms an upright pot plant as fresh growth appears.
It grows strongest in warmth. While the plant is producing leaves, keep it bright, warm and evenly moist. When light or temperature drops, new growth slows and the tuber may rest. Water much less during rest.
This Caladium grows from a tuber, which stores energy and allows the plant to restart after a rest period. Each leaf is carried on its own petiole, the stalk that holds the leaf, rather than growing from a woody stem. As more petioles appear, the plant fills out.
The leaves are mostly soft pink, with green veins and edging defining the heart shape. Older leaves naturally yellow as they age and can be removed at the base once they are spent.
Firm tubers can restart when warmth returns. If a tuber is divided, each viable piece needs at least one visible growing point and should dry before planting. Older plants may sometimes produce a small spathe and spadix, the typical aroid flower structure, but the leaves are the main feature.
Keep this plant out of reach of pets and children. Leaves, petioles and tuber tissue can irritate the mouth and stomach if eaten, and sap from cut parts may bother sensitive skin.
Caladiums are tropical American aroids grown from underground tubers. The genus name Caladium is linked to Malay keladi, an aroid plant name. 'Spring Fling' refers to the fresh rose-pink colour of this cultivar.
