The cultivated and botanical history of Caladium praetermissum ‘Hilo Beauty’

The plant sold as ‘Hilo Beauty’ circulated for years under Alocasia before it was formally described as the distinct species Caladium praetermissum in 2009.

Its likely home is wet tropical America, although the original wild locality is unknown and the species is documented only from cultivated material.

Handling and leaf care

Rotate the container if the broad leaves all face the window and give the long petioles clearance from furniture and curtains. Cut damaged or fully yellow petioles at the base and remove spent inflorescences without cutting into the tuberous crown.

Repotting and rest

Repot when roots fill the container, the tuberous base becomes crowded or the substrate loses its open structure. Do not force annual dormancy.

Light

Place Caladium ‘Hilo Beauty’ in strong filtered light near an east-facing window or behind a sheer curtain at a brighter exposure. Low light causes leaning petioles, an open clump and smaller new leaves.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate is dry and the lower root ball remains lightly moist. A leafy Caladium ‘Hilo Beauty’ should not remain dry throughout the pot, as its broad leaves wilt and develop damaged margins.

Temperature

Avoid cold conditions.

Fertilising

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser at a low dose during active leaf production. The plant may remain active beyond summer under stable indoor warmth and light, so feeding can continue at a reduced rate if new growth and normal water use continue.

Irregular cream and lime patches look diseased

The camouflage-like pale markings across dark green leaves are normal for ‘Hilo Beauty’, and each blade can differ. Stable dry patterning present from unfurling is not leaf spot. New lesions that enlarge, become water-soaked, turn brown in the centre or spread to other leaves should be isolated and removed.

Purple petioles darken near the base

Purple to purplish petioles are normal for this species. The warning is a change in texture: a healthy base stays firm, while rot becomes soft, wet, foul-smelling or easy to pull from the underground stem. Inspect immediately if darkening is accompanied by collapse.

Large shield-like leaves droop

A dry root ball can pull down the broad blades, but drooping in wet mix points to cold or damaged roots. Check moisture below the surface and keep the plant warm. Water a dry plant thoroughly; unpot a wet, worsening plant to inspect the tuberous underground stem and roots.

The plant stops growing after a temperature drop

Caladium ‘Hilo Beauty’ is warmth-dependent and may shed leaves or retreat after chilling. Keep the underground stem warm and reduce water while it is inactive. A firm structure can restart; softness, leaking tissue or a sour smell indicates cold-associated rot and requires immediate trimming.

Fine pale stippling spreads over the camouflage pattern

Use a hand lens on the leaf undersides. Spider mites create fine surface stippling and sometimes webbing after a leaf opens, unlike the larger cream markings already present as it unfurls. Isolate the plant and treat both leaf surfaces promptly if mites are confirmed.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

How the name Caladium praetermissum came about

The genus name Caladium comes from Malay keladi, a word used for taro-like aroids. The Latin epithet praetermissum means overlooked or forgotten, referring to the plant’s long misidentification as an Alocasia.

Étienne Pierre Ventenat established the genus Caladium in 1800 in Magasin Encyclopédique, volume 4, page 463.
