Caladium 'Candidum' is a white fancy-leaved Caladium with broad, heart-shaped leaves and strong green veins. The leaves rise on slim leaf stalks and spread gently above the pot while the plant is growing.
The white leaves are easy to recognise and show stress quickly. In filtered light and steady warmth, new leaves are less likely to mark. Strong sun, cold glass, rough handling or droplets drying on the leaf can leave brown or translucent patches on the pale tissue.
This cultivar grows from an underground storage tuber. When the leaves yellow, the tuber is storing energy for the next round of growth. Keep the pot much drier at that stage, then water again once new shoots appear.
Cultivated Caladiums are tropical aroids related to Caladium bicolor. They grow in warmth, then rest drier after the leaves fade.
Propagate by tuber division. Divide only mature, firm tubers, and make sure each section has a visible bud or growing point.
Keep Caladium 'Candidum' out of reach of pets and children. The leaves, leaf stalks and tuber contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, digestive tract and skin if plant tissue is eaten or handled after damage.
'Candidum' comes from Latin candidus/candidum, meaning bright or shining white, matching the pale leaf surface. Caladium is commonly traced to Malay keladi, used for aroid plants.
