Amorphophallus atroviridis grows one divided leaf at a time from an underground tuber. Its three-part canopy is an unusually deep emerald to almost black-green, and a narrow pink line can follow the leaflet margins, especially while the foliage is fresh.
The leaf begins as a tightly wrapped spear on a mottled stalk, then opens into many pointed leaflets held across three main divisions. Each growing season can produce a taller, broader canopy as the tuber gains weight; the entire leaf later dies back during dormancy. Mature tubers may flower before new foliage appears, producing a compact aroid inflorescence. The exceptionally dark leaf tissue and fine pink margin remain clear after the canopy has fully opened.
