Amorphophallus atroviridis grows from a resting tuber into one dark, detailed seasonal leaf during its active phase. Native to central Thailand, it moves between a leafy growing period and a quieter dormant period below the substrate.
When active, the plant can produce a dark reddish-brown petiole with spotted markings and deep green to almost blackish leaflet tones. During rest, the below-ground tuber needs much less moisture, so the care changes clearly between active growth and dormancy.
Amorphophallus atroviridis is a tuberous geophyte in Araceae. The species is native to central Thailand, where it has been recorded among limestone boulders in wet tropical conditions. That habitat points to moisture during growth, but also to air around the root zone rather than heavy, compacted soil.
In cultivation, the tuber is the plant’s stored energy source. During active growth, the plant needs warmth, light and careful moisture while the leaf is expanding. Once the leaf begins to yellow and the plant withdraws into the tuber, watering should be reduced strongly. A dormant tuber kept cold and wet is much more vulnerable than a leafy plant in active growth.
As an aroid, Amorphophallus atroviridis should be kept away from pets and small children. Damaged tissue and sap can irritate the mouth, throat and skin, so wear gloves when handling the tuber or cutting old growth.
Amorphophallus atroviridis Hett. is an accepted Araceae species first published in Blumea in 1994. Its known native range is central Thailand, and its tuberous habit separates it clearly from evergreen climbing aroids in indoor care.
