Alocasia ‘Pink Dragon’ (‘Aurora’)

Alocasia ‘Pink Dragon’ is a high-contrast Alocasia with deep green, glossy leaves, a soft silver shadow tracing the main veins, and saturated pink petioles. Growth is upright and fairly compact, with new leaves arriving one by one from a rhizomatous base, so it keeps a clean outline in a pot without needing a support.

Pink stems, sharp veins

• Pink petioles: rich, even colour that stays readable from a distance.
• Leaf finish: thicker, glossy blades with a silvered vein-shadow for crisp definition.
• Manageable size: often around 50–60 cm indoors in common pot sizes, with larger plants sometimes reaching ~70 cm over time.

Background & name note – ‘Pink Dragon’ / ‘Aurora’

Parentage is unclear in cultivation. A plant bought at Bangkok Flower Market was introduced into collections under the name ‘Aurora’, and it later became widely known in Europe as ‘Pink Dragon’. It also became a key parent plant behind Safari Series hybrids. Because trade names are not always applied consistently, a practical ID cue is the leaf underside: it is typically matte and often green, and it can deepen to dusky burgundy tones in lower light, while the top surface stays glossy.

Keep roots warm and airy

• Light: bright, filtered light; protect from harsh midday sun on glass.
• Watering: water thoroughly, then wait until the top 10–15% of the pot has dried before watering again.
• Temperature: aim for stable warmth in the 18–27 °C range; avoid cold drafts and cold window ledges.
• Humidity: steady, moderate-to-high humidity supports cleaner leaf edges; airflow matters just as much as moisture.
• Placement: keep it out of traffic—petioles bruise and kink more easily than the leaves suggest.

Chunky mix, gentle feeding

• Substrate: chunky and airy (for example coco coir + orchid bark + perlite/pumice) so roots get oxygen between waterings.
• Feeding: light, balanced fertiliser at low dose every 4–6 weeks while it is producing new leaves; flush with plain water occasionally to reduce salt build-up.
• Repotting: step up only one pot size (about 2–3 cm wider) once roots have filled the pot; oversized pots stay wet too long.

Offsets and inert substrates

Division is the practical option if offsets form: separate during repotting only when each division has its own roots and a clear growth point. Alocasia ‘Pink Dragon’ can adapt to inert substrates as well—keep nutrient solution below the rhizome, refresh regularly, and prioritise oxygen around the crown so the base never sits in stagnant moisture.

If leaves sulk

• Spider mites, thrips, mealybugs: check leaf undersides and petiole joints; treat early.
• Yellowing, soft leaves: most often a mix staying wet and cool for too long; increase aeration and warmth.
• Brown tips/edges: salt build-up, inconsistent moisture, or dry air combined with low airflow; flush the mix and stabilise conditions.
• Drooping after repotting: common transplant shock; keep warm, bright, and slightly drier until new roots re-establish.
• Rot at the base: remove affected tissue, reduce moisture, and switch to a chunkier mix before regrowth is attempted.

Pet & child safety

Alocasia contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if chewed; keep away from pets and children.
