Alocasia nebula is a compact Bornean species with matt grey-green leaves, dark impressed veins and reddish-purple undersides. Its thick, softly textured blades create a clouded surface with strong contrast between the upper and lower sides.
Warm roots, filtered light, higher humidity and an airy substrate are central for this species. The plant stays comparatively compact, but it reacts quickly to cold, wet or compacted root conditions.
Alocasia nebula is native to Sarawak, Borneo, where it is associated with lowland tropical rainforest floor conditions over limestone. In cultivation, warm roots, filtered light, humid air and an open potting mix keep the root zone active and aerated.
Alocasia nebula contains calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate the mouth, throat and skin. Keep it away from pets and children, and handle damaged leaves or cut tissue with care.
The genus name Alocasia is derived from Greek a-, meaning not or without, and Colocasia, a closely related aroid genus. Alocasia nebula was described by A. Hay and published in Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 2000; the epithet nebula comes from Latin for mist, vapour or cloud.
