Aglaonema ‘Maria Christina’

Origin of Aglaonema ‘Maria Christina’

‘Maria Christina’ is an established Aglaonema derived from its parent, ‘Silver Queen’. Its exact breeder, place and date of horticultural origin are still uncertain.

Care for Aglaonema ‘Maria Christina’

• Light: Medium indirect light is a good baseline, with brighter indirect light also suitable. Keep the pale silver areas away from strong direct sun.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm, stable conditions around 18–27 °C suit it; 16 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure. Keep the plant at roughly 50–60% relative humidity.
• Watering: Let the mix partly dry and use the weight of the pot to confirm that the lower part of the root ball is also losing moisture, then wet the root ball fully and drain. The close crown shades the pot, so a dry-looking surface is not enough reason to water if the container still feels heavy.
• Crown and roots: Keep loose dead material out of the short stem bases and use an airy mix in a pot matched to the root system. Do not leave water pooled in the centre of the plant after watering or cleaning.
• Feeding: Apply balanced houseplant fertiliser at light strength while the plant is actively extending, then Cut back on feeding as activity drops.
• Renewal: Older canes can be shortened and rerooted if the plant becomes leggy.
• Repotting: Give the clump a wider container when either the root system or basal shoots begin pressing for space.
• Propagation: Separate shoots from the base once they have their own established roots, or root healthy stem sections.

Problems and solutions for Aglaonema ‘Maria Christina’

• Successive new leaves become smaller: Check light, root crowding and how quickly the lower mix dries. Increase indirect light if the position is dim, repot one size up only if roots are tightly packed, and avoid watering again while the lower root zone is still wet.
• The plant wilts although the mix is wet and smells sour: Root decay is likely. Unpot the plant, keep firm pale roots, remove only soft dark tissue and repot in fresh airy mix sized to the healthy root system.
• Brown tips spread across otherwise firm leaves: Uneven moisture, fertiliser salts or direct hot airflow can all contribute. Stabilise watering, move the plant away from heaters and flush the mix if deposits are present.
• A leaf has a fixed crease after transport or cleaning: The fold is physical damage and will not flatten again. Keep the damaged leaf if it is still firm and healthy, and give the crown more clearance so new foliage can open without folding.

Aglaonema ‘Maria Christina’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Aglaonema first published, and what does it mean?

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Aglaonema in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 1829, page 892.
