Where ‘Confetti Tricolor’ comes from

This three-colour plant comes from Syngonium podophyllum, a tropical American vine whose natural range begins in Mexico. It climbs through sheltered vegetation in warm, moist places.

Young plants carry simple arrowhead leaves. Older supported vines may produce divided foliage, and the cream, green and pink pattern can remain visible.

Care for ‘Confetti Tricolor’

Light for cream, green and pink leaves

Provide bright indirect light to support the green tissue and protect the cream and blush areas. Direct sun can leave dry pale patches. If a shoot produces several leaves with very little green, cut back to the last node that gave a healthier colour balance.

Checking moisture around pale foliage

Check the mix 2 to 3 cm below the surface. When that layer feels dry, water the entire root zone and let it drain. Combine a coir or peat base with bark pieces and perlite to keep air around the roots. Pale foliage shows drought and root trouble early, so avoid both prolonged dryness and a pot that stays heavy for days.

Warmth and shaping the vine

A stable 18 to 27°C is suitable, with moderate humidity, fresh air and no exposure below 15°C. Use a weak feed only when fresh foliage is forming. A pole supports larger leaves; selective pruning encourages more patterned shoots near the base. Move to a larger pot after the roots have thoroughly occupied the current one. Cuttings need a healthy node and enough green tissue to sustain new growth.

Problems with ‘Confetti Tricolor’

• Cream or pink tissue browns: Pale sections react first to direct sun, severe drying and excess fertiliser. Move the plant to filtered light, water more evenly and rinse salts from the potting mix.
• A shoot produces almost no green: Very pale growth can weaken. Cut back to a node that previously produced a healthier green, cream and pink balance.
• Leaves droop and yellow: Test the root ball. Dry mix needs a full soak; a wet heavy pot may contain damaged roots. Remove soft tissue and repot into an airy container.
• Pink flecks are joined by silver scars: Black specks and distortion reveal thrips. Fine stippling and webbing indicate mites. Check for mealybugs and scale, isolate the plant and treat the insect identified.
• Soft marks continue to enlarge: Move the plant away from the rest, allow the leaves to stay dry and increase air movement. Cut away heavily damaged foliage and seek diagnosis if new lesions appear.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

How the name Syngonium podophyllum came about

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
