Vivid, adaptable, and full of character – Syngonium podophyllum 'Aureum' adds a fresh green-gold glow to indoor spaces. Juvenile leaves emerge bright lime and mature into broader, lobed forms with soft golden marbling. The deeper green stems enhance the foliage’s colour impact. This tropical climbing aroid adapts well to both vertical supports and free-trailing growth, making it an easy fit for shelves, hanging planters, or moss poles.
The species Syngonium podophyllum is native from Mexico to Bolivia, thriving in humid lowland and foothill forests from sea level to around 1,200 m. The cultivar 'Aureum' is a horticultural selection valued for its chartreuse foliage and does not occur naturally in the wild. In nature, the plant begins as a ground creeper before climbing tree trunks via aerial roots. Indoors, 'Aureum' retains a fast-growing, adaptable habit, thriving when warmth, moisture, and filtered light are provided.
Toxicity: All parts contain insoluble calcium oxalates and are toxic if ingested by pets or humans.
Supporting 'Aureum' vertically encourages larger leaves and a more dramatic presence, while trailing growth creates a relaxed, cascading effect. Recreating its shaded, humid forest-edge environment indoors promotes steady, colourful growth year-round.
The genus name Syngonium comes from the Greek for “joined ovaries,” describing the plant’s fused floral structure. The species epithet podophyllum combines “podo” (foot) and “phyllon” (leaf) in reference to its foot-shaped juvenile leaves. First described by Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829, it remains one of the most popular indoor aroids. The cultivar name 'Aureum' means “golden” in Latin, reflecting its leaf colour.
Bring a bright chartreuse accent into your collection with the easy-care, fast-growing Syngonium podophyllum 'Aureum'. Buy now and enjoy its tropical, year-round colour indoors.
