The species behind ‘Batik’, Syngonium podophyllum, is native across the American tropics from Mexico through Central America into northern and central South America. Young shoots bear simple leaves, while established lianas climb by aerial roots and can develop deeply divided adult blades.

The cultivated selection is known as both ‘Batik’ and ‘Golden Venation’.

Care for supported aroid vines

Growth and support: Train the vine on a narrow textured support if progressively larger leaves are desired. Cut back immediately above a node for branching. Use a porous, moisture-retentive aroid mix suitable for a climbing vine. Water after the upper layer has dried, wetting the entire root system and emptying any outer pot.

Light: Keep Syngonium podophyllum ‘Batik’ where light is bright and indirect so its close white venation develops on firm green leaves. Gentle morning sun can be introduced in stages, but sudden strong sun may scorch the pale veins and leaf margins.

Symptoms, Causes and Solutions

The crisp cream reticulate network is normal when it repeats in flat, intact leaves. Later yellowing between the veins is different from the normal cream network. If new growth is also abnormal, check the roots, potting-mix pH and nutrition. Do not try to erase the natural network with additional feed. Thrips injury is irregular and rough, commonly with tiny black droppings or distorted rolls. Mites produce finer pale speckling and bronzing on the underside. Clear signs separate both pests from the stable vein pattern. Separate an infested plant, follow the treatment label and inspect every new leaf.

Wilt above wet mix and soft roots means the rotten parts need to be removed and the roots given more air. Dry mix around firm roots instead needs a full watering. Intense direct sunlight can burn the pale vein network and adjacent tissue, leaving fixed tan patches. Quarantine the vine and prevent further leaf wetting when a soaked-looking area expands across the venation.

Where does the name Syngonium podophyllum come from?

The name Syngonium comes from Greek words meaning “together” and “reproductive organs”, referring to the united ovaries in its flowers. The species name podophyllum means “foot-leaved”, a reference to the foot-like arrangement of mature leaf divisions.
