Name history of 'Argyraeus' and the species range

The name Argyraeus dates back to nineteenth-century botanical naming. Pothos argyraea was published in 1859, followed by Scindapsus pictus var. argyraeus in 1898. Today, this silver-spotted form is grown and sold as 'Argyraeus'.

In the wild, S. pictus occurs in southeastern Bangladesh and Thailand, on the Malay Peninsula, and on Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Philippines. It climbs in wet tropical forest.

Everyday care for 'Argyraeus'

• Light: Give 'Argyraeus' bright filtered light along the full vine, including the newest growth.
• Watering: When the top of the potting mix has dried and the pot feels lighter, water thoroughly and let the pot drain completely.
• Trailing or climbing: Let the flexible stems hang freely or guide them onto a board, pole or trellis. For climbing growth, keep the stem close to the support where the roots can attach.
• Potting mix: Use a loose organic mix with bark or coarse coco chips and pumice or perlite so excess water drains easily while some moisture remains around the roots.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm indoor conditions around 18–29°C suit S. pictus. 'Argyraeus' does well in typical room humidity. A little air movement helps when leaves and stems overlap.
• Feeding: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser as directed on the label while new leaves are forming. If the vine slows down, stop feeding until the plant starts growing again.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or the potting mix begins to drain more slowly.
• Propagation: Take a stem cutting with at least one healthy leaf joint (node) and root it in warm, lightly moist mix.

Troubleshooting 'Argyraeus'

• Small silver-spotted leaves fold inward as the pot becomes very light: Soak the mix evenly and let excess water drain. For the next watering, check the pot while the leaves are still firm.
• Several compact leaves yellow while the potting mix remains wet: Inspect the roots. Cut away soft brown roots with a clean, disinfected tool until only firm, healthy roots remain, discard the decayed material and repot in fresh, free-draining mix.
• Grey-brown, wet-looking or wilted patches appear after a cold spell: Keep the vine in a warm room with a steady temperature. Wait until the top of the mix has dried and the pot feels lighter before watering again. Remove leaves or stem sections that turn fully brown, dry or soft.
• Brown or grey spots spread across the silver-speckled foliage: Remove affected leaves, keep the foliage dry during watering and improve gentle airflow around the vine. Isolate the plant and watch new leaves for fresh spotting.
• Fine pale speckles, scraped marks, webbing, bumps or cottony clusters appear: Check for mites, thrips, scale and mealybugs. Isolate the vine. After identifying the pest, use an indoor-plant treatment whose label lists it and repeat treatment at the interval on the label.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Scindapsus pictus get its name?

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Scindapsus in 1832 in Meletemata Botanica, page 21.

Justus Carl Hasskarl first described Scindapsus pictus in 1842 in Tijdschrift voor Natuurlijke Geschiedenis en Physiologie, volume 9, page 164.
