Scindapsus pictus is a wet-tropical root climber native from southeastern Bangladesh through Indochina and Thailand into western and central Malesia. Juvenile plants travel across the forest floor until their aerial roots meet a trunk, then climb with their leaves held close to the supporting surface.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ arose in cultivation as a selection of this widespread species. The older botanical names Pothos argyraeus and Scindapsus argyraeus refer to S. pictus itself rather than to a separate wild ancestor of the cultivar.

Maintaining a healthy climbing habit

Root care, light and settling in: Place Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ in medium to bright indirect light, adding gentle sun only after acclimatisation. A bright position keeps the small leaves close together, while hot unfiltered exposure can bleach or scorch them. Ordinary household humidity is workable when the roots are healthy, though moderate humidity helps fresh leaves open cleanly.

Root care, support and leaf care: On a rough bark, coir or moss support, the nodes can attach and gradually produce larger leaves. A trailing or regularly pruned vine retains smaller juvenile foliage. Repot one size at a time once roots fill the container. Cut just below a node for propagation.

Root care, watering and light: Grow it in a chunky, oxygen-rich aroid mix. Water thoroughly after the upper portion has dried while a little moisture remains deeper in the pot, then empty the saucer or cover pot. Do not keep the substrate constantly damp to encourage aerial roots. Reduce watering as winter light and growth slow, using the moisture below the surface rather than the thickness of the leaves as the guide. Feed moderately during active growth.

Solving Common Care Issues

The small discrete silver spots and narrow silver margin of ‘Argyraeus’ are part of the leaf. Thrips injury is irregular, rough or distorted and often accompanied by tiny black droppings; scale and mealybugs show visible covers or waxy insects. Examine damaged areas and new rolled leaves closely. If a pest is confirmed, move the affected vine into a separate area and repeat treatment until new growth opens cleanly.

Inward-curling or wilted leaves can follow opposite root conditions. Rehydrate deeply if the pot is light and roots remain firm. If the mix stays wet and roots are black or mushy, remove decayed material and repot the viable vine into a chunkier potting mix. Constant surface watering does not repair aerial roots and can worsen oxygen shortage below.

Long bare gaps between leaves and progressively smaller leaves usually mean insufficient light or the absence of a climbable support. Increase filtered light gradually and let nodes attach if larger foliage is wanted. Fixed pale or tan patches on the window-facing surface are permanent sunburn. Ordinary small juvenile leaves on a trailing stem are not a disease.

Scindapsus pictus 'Argyraeus' is not safe for people or pets to chew

• This plant is toxic to humans, cats and dogs if ingested.
• Leaves and stems contain needle-like, insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

How did Scindapsus pictus get its name?

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.
