Rhipsalis burchellii is a fine-stemmed Brazilian epiphytic cactus with slender, branching, pendent growth. Its narrow green stems divide repeatedly, creating a light cascading plant with a delicate stem texture.
The plant forms many slim branches that hang softly as it matures. Small white flowers and rose-coloured fruits can appear on mature plants, while indoor specimens usually build a fine curtain of branching stems.
Rhipsalis burchellii grows as an epiphyte, with slender stems and fine roots adapted to loose organic debris on trees. The fine branches can dry faster than thicker cactus stems, so care should follow stem firmness and substrate condition.
In a pot, this species develops a soft hanging shape with narrow branching stems. A raised position lets the stems hang freely while the root zone stays airy after watering.
Rhipsalis burchellii is generally treated as pet-safe. Long fine stems can attract chewing, which may still cause mild stomach upset.
Britton and Rose described Rhipsalis burchellii in 1923. The species name honours William John Burchell, whose botanical collections included Brazilian plants.
