Philodendron warszewiczii

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron warszewiczii

Philodendron warszewiczii comes from southern Mexico through Central America. It occurs mainly in tropical dry forest, growing on the ground, over rocks and sometimes on trees. Wild plants can drop all their leaves during the dry season.

Care for Philodendron warszewiczii

• Support: A sturdy pole or plank is useful if the stem is climbing. Plants allowed to scramble need enough space and a stable pot.
• Watering: During active leafy growth, let the upper part of the potting mix dry before watering thoroughly. If the plant becomes leafless while the stem remains firm and growth has stopped, lengthen the interval between waterings until active growth returns.
• Temperature: Keep temperatures roughly 18–29 °C during both active growth and rest. Keep the plant above 15 °C even when watering has been reduced.
• Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity during active growth. Keep room humidity steady if the plant becomes leafless and inactive.
• Light: Choose a bright, diffuse position away from prolonged hot sun. Introduce any direct sun gradually.
• Potting mix: Use a coarse, free-draining aroid mix that retains air around the roots, especially while the plant is resting.
• Feeding: Feed while the plant is actively producing leaves. Pause or reduce fertiliser during a clear leafless rest.
• Repotting: Repot during active growth when the roots need more room or the potting mix has broken down. Avoid disturbing a resting, leafless plant unless there is a root problem.
• Propagation: Select a healthy stem cutting with at least one node. A node with an aerial root already formed can establish more easily.

Leaf drop, stem condition and scale

• The plant drops most or all of its leaves: Check the stem and the recent growth pattern before assuming the plant is dying. If the stem is firm and growth has slowed, the leaf drop may be part of its seasonal rest; water less and wait for active growth to return. If the pot stays wet, smells sour or the stem is soft, check the roots before watering again.
• The stem turns soft or dark: Treat this as a warning sign, especially during a leafless period. Stop adding water until you have checked the root system; if roots are mushy or foul-smelling, follow our root rot guide.
• Hard brown bumps appear on the stem or leaf bases: Check whether the bumps sit on top of the tissue and look for sticky residue. If you confirm scale insects, isolate the plant, remove accessible insects, apply a houseplant treatment labelled for scale and repeat it as directed on the label; our scale insect guide covers the full treatment sequence.

Philodendron warszewiczii is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Philodendron warszewiczii

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet warszewiczii honours Polish naturalist and plant collector Józef Warszewicz.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Karl Heinrich Emil Koch and Carl David Bouché first described Philodendron warszewiczii in 1855 in Index Seminum of the Berlin Botanic Garden, volume 1855, issue appendix, page 4.
