Dry-season rhythms from Mexico to Panama

Wild plants may shed their leaves during the dry season and resume growth when moisture returns.

The species ranges from southern and south-eastern Mexico through Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua to Panama. It occurs mainly in seasonally dry tropical forest at approximately 300–1,900 m and may grow on the ground, rocks or trees. Koch and Bouché published it in 1855 from plants collected by Józef Warszewicz in Guatemala.

Philodendron warszewiczii: care through growth and rest

• Light: The large divided canopy develops well in bright filtered light. Introduce any direct sun slowly and avoid exposing a shade-grown plant abruptly.
• Water: During active growth, water deeply once the top of the mix is partly dry. If growth slows or leaves are shed, allow more drying between waterings. Do not let healthy roots become completely dry or waterlogged.
• Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity is suitable, with good airflow through the many lobes and around the stout stem.
• Temperature: Warm conditions support active growth. Cooler, dimmer conditions lower water demand and can lead to a resting phase.
• Substrate: A coarse, airy mix should drain readily while retaining a modest amount of water.
• Support and space: Use a stout support or a broad, stable base for the heavy stem and wide canopy. The plant may climb, scramble or hold itself partly upright.
• Feeding: When new leaves are actively forming, feed the plant; reduce or pause fertilizer while it is resting or leafless.
• Repotting: Repot as active growth resumes or when roots have filled the container, choosing a stable pot that accommodates the thick stem.
• Propagation: Use a stem section carrying an active bud, a rooted offset or an air layer. A firm leafless stem with healthy roots can resume growth when conditions improve.

Philodendron warszewiczii: seasonal leaf loss or decay

• Seasonal leaf loss: This species can shed leaves when light, warmth and water demand fall. A firm stem and sound roots can remain viable; reduce watering to match the smaller leaf area without letting the roots dry out completely.
• Signs of rot: Soft dark tissue, a foul smell and roots that collapse when handled are not normal rest. Remove dead material with a clean tool, restore air around the roots and keep the plant separate if decay continues.
• Leaf loss outside seasonal slowing: Leaf loss when the plant is not otherwise slowing can follow cold, saturated roots, drought, salts or pests. Check the stem and roots before calling it seasonal.
• Divided-leaf damage: The many lobes can snag or tear, and jagged missing tissue may also come from chewing pests. Give the canopy clearance and inspect damaged margins for insects or night-feeding slugs and snails.
• Pests on retained divided leaves: Leaves retained during slower growth can still develop mite stippling or webbing and thrips scars with black specks. Check every lobe and the remaining growing point. Keep an affected plant apart and apply a product labelled for the pest to all affected lobes.
• Watering while leafless: A leafless plant uses water slowly. Check moisture deeper in the pot and water only as the root zone dries; constant saturation can turn a sound resting stem into rot.

Philodendron warszewiczii: leaf and stem safety

• Bare stem and new shoots: Its divided leaves, new shoots and bare stem are unsafe to chew, including while the plant is resting. Its living tissues contain bundles of insoluble calcium-oxalate crystals called raphides. Chewing releases these microscopic needles, which irritate the lips, mouth and throat. Keep the bare stem, emerging shoots and removed leaves beyond chewing reach, including while the plant is resting.
• If a person chews it: Chewing can cause immediate burning or pain in the mouth, redness, drooling and swelling of the lips or tongue. Swallowing may become painful or difficult. Remove any visible plant pieces. Rinse the mouth with water, then spit out the water. Contact a local poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron warszewiczii. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force fluids if swallowing is painful or difficult.
• If a cat or dog chews it: Cats and dogs may drool, paw at the mouth, gag or vomit after chewing. They may also refuse food or develop swelling of the lips or tongue. Move the pet away from the plant. If it is safe, remove visible plant pieces and gently wipe or rinse the mouth. Call a veterinarian or animal poison centre and identify the plant as Philodendron warszewiczii. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force food or liquid.
• Sap on skin or in the eyes: Cutting the stem, a new shoot or leaf stalk can release fresh sap. Sap can redden the skin and cause stinging or itching. In the eyes, it can cause painful irritation. Wash affected skin with soap and water for 15 minutes. If sap gets into an eye, rinse it with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical care if pain, redness or changes in vision are severe or continue.
• When to get urgent help: For a person, get urgent medical help for excessive drooling, severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking. For a pet, get urgent veterinary help for severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking.

Warszewicz’s Central American philodendron

Warszewiczii is a Latinized genitive meaning Warszewicz’s. Philodendron is built from Greek roots meaning loving and tree. The species honours Józef Warszewicz, a Polish naturalist and plant collector who explored Central and South America and later led horticultural work at the Kraków Botanic Garden. Plants he collected in Guatemala formed the basis of the name published in 1855.
