Philodendron linnaei

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron linnaei

Philodendron linnaei is native to Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. It grows as an epiphytic climber in wet tropical forest.

Its long connecting stem sections are part of the species' natural architecture and help it move between suitable positions on a host tree.

How to care for Philodendron linnaei

• Support: Use a rough pole, branch or bark slab that gives both compact leafy sections and longer stems somewhere to attach.
• Light: Provide bright indirect light for steady growth and protect the foliage from strong direct sun.
• Potting mix and watering: Grow it in a coarse, airy mix. Water after the surface begins to dry and let excess water drain freely.
• Temperature and humidity: Philodendron linnaei grows comfortably at 18–29 °C. Keep the surrounding air near 50–60% humidity and move it warmer during prolonged periods below 15 °C.
• Feeding: During active vine growth, use a light-to-moderate dose of complete fertiliser; then ease off during a growth pause.
• Repotting: Give the root ball more space when it fills the container, and repot sooner if the supported plant has become unstable.
• Propagation: Choose a healthy stem section with at least one node for propagation. A node that already has an aerial root can support early establishment.

Problems and solutions for Philodendron linnaei

• Several successive leafy sections produce weak, undersized leaves: Compare the current light level with earlier healthy growth and make sure the stem has usable support. Inspect the roots as well if light and support remain unchanged.
• Leaves soften and yellow while the root zone remains damp: Check whether the substrate has become dense or airless. Remove decayed roots if present and repot into a coarser mix that drains more freely.

Philodendron linnaei is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Philodendron linnaei

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet linnaei honours Carl Linnaeus, whose binomial system shaped modern botanical naming.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Karl Sigismund Kunth first described Philodendron linnaei in 1841 in Enumeratio Plantarum, volume 3, page 47.
