Philodendron linnaei

A broad tropical South American range

In wet tropical forest, Philodendron linnaei grows as an epiphyte or hemiepiphyte with searching stems between intermittent leafy rosettes. Its broad range extends from Bolivia and Peru through Colombia, Ecuador, the Guianas and Venezuela, with additional records from northern and south-eastern Brazil.

Room for each rosette along the wandering stem

Let the stem travel across a broad rough pole, cork slab or plank. Secure only the stem and leave enough space for each leafy rosette to turn towards the light.

• Water and light: Give it bright indirect light and introduce direct sun gradually. Let roughly half of the potting mix dry before watering thoroughly; a mounted plant or one in a very coarse mix may need smaller amounts more often.
• Roots and climate: A chunky bark-based mix with coco chips keeps air around the roots. Warm conditions, moderate to high humidity and gentle airflow suit the plant.

When bare runners or damaged leaves cause concern

Leafless stretches between compact rosettes are normal for this roaming species.

A healthy runner stays firm and continues towards a live growing tip.

• Yellow sap appears after a break: A clean wound may release yellowish sap. The sap itself is normal; inspect further if nearby intact tissue becomes soft, discoloured or continues to deteriorate.
• A folded leaf opens with scars: Look inside the rolled leaf and its sheath for thrips or black specks, then check if the emerging blade caught against the support.
• Yellowing develops while the pot stays wet: Inspect the roots and lower stem for dark, soft tissue. Remove decay and replace mix that has become dense and waterlogged.

Fine pale stippling is not part of the normal leaf surface. Check both sides of the leaves with magnification for spider mites before treatment.

Philodendron linnaei is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Philodendron linnaei

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet linnaei honours Carl Linnaeus, whose binomial system shaped modern botanical naming.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Karl Sigismund Kunth first described Philodendron linnaei in 1841 in Enumeratio Plantarum, volume 3, page 47.
