Philodendron ‘Glorious’ (gloriosum x melanochrysum)

Parentage and origin of Philodendron ‘Glorious’ (gloriosum x melanochrysum)

Philodendron ‘Glorious’ was created in cultivation from Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron melanochrysum. Both parent species are native to Colombia's wet tropical biome. ‘Glorious’ itself is a horticultural hybrid.

Growing Philodendron ‘Glorious’ (gloriosum × melanochrysum)

Support and space. Add a stable upright support early and guide the climbing stem onto it. Leave generous room around the plant for its expanding velvet leaves.

Light. Provide bright indirect light and protect the leaves from harsh direct sun.

Warmth, humidity and leaf care. A steady 18–29 °C suits the plant; sustained temperatures below 15 °C are too cool. Keep the surrounding air in the 60–80% range. Keep a little air moving around the foliage. Keep the velvet leaves dry.

Watering and potting mix. Before watering, feel deeper into the mix and compare the weight of the pot. Water only when the upper layer feels dry and the pot is noticeably lighter. Water thoroughly, let the excess drain and empty collected water. Use an open, airy mix that drains freely and keeps air around the roots.

Feeding. Feed modestly during active growth, then reduce feeding as available light and growth slow.

Repotting. Give the roots more room when they crowd the container; also repot if the plant and its support become unstable.

Propagation. Propagate from a sound node-bearing stem cutting; choose one with an aerial root when available.

When Philodendron ‘Glorious’ shows signs of stress

A leaning stem or successively smaller leaves: Lost support or insufficient filtered light may be limiting growth. Wet-root stress, juvenile growth and recent propagation can also reduce leaf size. Secure the stem to stable support, improve light gradually and check moisture and drainage before feeding. Use the next healthy leaf to judge whether conditions are improving.

Scuffs on the velvet surface: Stable marks usually come from physical contact. Give the leaves more clearance. An area that spreads without further contact or becomes wet or haloed needs the advancing-spot response below.

Water-soaked, haloed or dead tissue that continues to expand: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray and handling can cause fixed injury. Isolate an advancing case, keep its foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue cleanly. Avoid propagation from symptomatic material and obtain a diagnosis before applying a disease-specific chemical.

Fine stippling, webbing, cottony deposits, fixed bumps or silvered scars: These signs make mites, mealybugs, scale or thrips plausible; dark specks or visible insects can clarify the distinction. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Inspect leaf undersides, petiole bases and new growth for concealed feeding sites, then apply a suitable product labelled for the pest to exposed and sheltered areas. Repeat only as the label instructs.

A light, dry pot with droop or crisp leaf edges: The roots may be short of water, and a resistant centre can leave part of the root ball dry. Soak it thoroughly, confirm that the centre has taken up water and drain the pot fully. Begin checking it sooner. Continued droop in moist medium calls for a root examination and a pause in further watering.

Yellowing and droop in medium that remains wet and heavy: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce root-zone oxygen and may lead to root rot. Withhold water, remove standing water and verify that drainage is working. Inspect the root system only if decline persists, keeping firm roots and removing only dead, soft tissue. If the medium has collapsed or its drainage has failed, repot into an airy, freely draining mix and correct the watering-to-light balance.

Philodendron ‘Glorious’ (gloriosum x melanochrysum) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of the names Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron melanochrysum

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Gloriosum comes from Latin and means glorious or splendid. Melanochrysum combines Greek melas or melanos, black or very dark, with chrysos, gold.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Édouard-François André first described Philodendron gloriosum in 1876 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 23, page 194.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described Philodendron melanochrysum in 1873 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 20, page 198.
