Philodendron alternans

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron alternans

Philodendron alternans is native to Rio de Janeiro state in southeastern Brazil, where it grows in wet tropical Atlantic Forest. In nature it uses trees and other woody vegetation as a climbing surface and can grow above the forest floor in warm, humid conditions.

Indoor care for Philodendron alternans

• Give the vine a clear route upward: Use a stable pole or board and leave enough space around the plant for the long leaves to hang without rubbing against walls or neighbouring pots.
• Keep it in bright, indirect light: Choose a bright spot without harsh direct sun. If you move it closer to a sunny window, increase the light gradually.
• Temperature and humidity: Temperatures near 18–29 °C are suitable; use a warmer position during sustained periods below 15 °C. Target a humidity range of about 50–60%.
• Watering: When the top layer starts to dry, soak the pot thoroughly and let the excess water drain away.
• Use a loose, chunky potting mix: A coarse aroid mix lets excess water drain away while still holding enough moisture between waterings.
• Feeding: Use a moderate dose of complete houseplant fertiliser while fresh growth is active, then ease off when growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot once the roots are crowded or the plant-and-support setup begins to lose stability.
• Propagation method: Root a vigorous node-bearing cutting, preferably one that already carries an aerial root.

Common checks for Philodendron alternans

• Fine pale speckling appears on the leaves: Look over both surfaces for spider mites, especially close to the central vein. If they are present, move the plant away from the rest of your plants, wipe or rinse the leaves and treat the infestation with a mite product for houseplants.
• A leaf develops a sharp fold or dry crease: Look for pressure from a wall, support or nearby pot. Give new growth more room; if the plant is also very dry, water it thoroughly. An existing crease will remain visible.
• Yellowing spreads and the pot takes days to dry: Lengthen the gap between waterings and confirm that the container drains well. If the plant also becomes limp, check the roots, remove soft or rotten sections and move it into fresh, airy mix if needed.

Philodendron alternans is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Philodendron alternans get its name?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The Latin word alternans means alternating or taking turns.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott first described Philodendron alternans in 1856 in Synopsis Aroidearum, page 75.
